The number you see above you, there on the top of the screen, is your IP address. The function of an IP address is to allow your computer to communicate with websites, other computers and devices, and networks online. IP stands for Internet Protocol, and these unique identifying addresses are the foundational backbone of the internet we know today

Without IP addresses, it would be impossible for websites to share information in the way that they currently do.

Your IP address shares your current location, but doesn't go any further than that. Your IP address is determined by your device, not you personally. Have you ever wondered how Google knows what the weather is where you are, and you get targeted ads about attractive singles in your area (but it actually says your area)? These websites are ascertaining this information through your public IP address.
